About the Reading

The LaborFest Writers gathered at Bird & Beckett bookstore in Glen Park for their annual reading as part of LaborFest 2025 — the festival that each year marks the anniversary of Bloody Thursday, July 5, 1934, when workers Howard Sperry and Nick Bordoise were shot and killed on the San Francisco waterfront.

An evening of poetry, memoir, fiction, and nonfiction by rabble-rousers, activists, leftist radicals, union members, immigrants, native-born, and plain old trouble-makers — sharing writing on the issues we face in these difficult times.

Bird & Beckett Books & Records has been a home for LaborFest Writers readings for many years. Located at 653 Chenery Street in the Glen Park neighborhood, it is one of San Francisco's great independent bookstores.
