Bootleg joints – places that distributed illegally produced alcoholic beverages Prohibition was not repealed until 1933.

Brass checks – brass tokens used by Steamship companies to pay workers

Limey – nickname for Rank and file leader  Harry Bridges

Shape-up – Meeting of hiring bosses and stevedores where work is assigned, riddled with favoritism, discrimination, corruption,  and pay-offs in the hiring of men.

Speed-up – Forcing workers to work at a rapid and often unsafe speed. Employers could fire any man considered too slow. This meant that every man at a site had to work the absolute fastest he could for fear of losing his job.
